Karaka’s governance evolved over time. It was first managed by the Karaka Road District Board. Then it joined Franklin County in 1918. Now it is part of Auckland Council. It falls under the Franklin Local Board.

The area around Karaka Lakes thrives. It supports thoroughbred horse studs, dairy farming, and sheep farming. New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Sales Complex is located here. It hosts the Karaka Million race meeting at Ellerslie. Westbury Stud and Haunui Farm also call Karaka home.

The Whātāpaka Marae is nearby. Its meeting house is named Tamaoho. It is a traditional gathering place for local Māori. Three Waikato Tainui hapū connect with the marae. These are primarily Ngāti Tamaoho, and secondarily Ngāi Tai and Ngāti Koheriki.

Karaka boasts quality education. Karaka School and Te Hihi School are full primary schools. They educate students from years 1 to 8. Karaka School marked its 75th jubilee in 1978. Te Hihi School began in 1914.

The lakes themselves enhance the environment. They feature small yachts, fountains, and weirs. These water features create a setting that locals love. The wider community also enjoys them.
