“A phoenix from the ashes,” a weathered Lisboeta might say, gesturing towards the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha. This church, tucked away in Lisbon’s bustling Baixa district, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a survivor, a testament to the city’s resilience. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha stands on the site of a much older church, the Igreja da Misericórdia, Lisbon’s second grandest Manueline temple after Jerónimos Monastery. Imagine Lisbon in 1534. The newly completed Igreja da Misericórdia, with its vaulted ceilings and marble pillars, was a beacon of faith. It housed the Brotherhood of the Misericórdia, a charitable organization established by Queen Eleanor of Viseu, whose sculpted likeness, along with King Manuel I and Pope Alexander VI, graced the church’s elaborate south portico. This portico, a masterpiece of Manueline artistry, depicted the Virgin of Mercy sheltering figures of nobility and clergy, a symbol of the Brotherhood’s mission. For over two centuries, the Igreja da Misericórdia served Lisbon. Its walls witnessed royal decrees and everyday prayers, market days and religious processions. Then came the fateful day of November 1, 1755. The earth quaked, the city crumbled, and fire swept through the ruins. The Igreja da Misericórdia was devastated, its vaulted ceiling collapsed, a bell tower destroyed. Yet, from the wreckage, something remarkable emerged. The magnificent south portico, though damaged, remained. When the city began to rebuild, architect Francisco António Ferreira saw an opportunity. He incorporated the salvaged portico, along with other surviving elements like Manueline windows and a central column, into a new church. He reoriented the structure, making the former south entrance the main façade. The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament became the new presbytery. The reborn church became the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, a name that acknowledges its predecessor while marking a new beginning. Today, as you stand before the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of the portico. Look for the kneeling cherubs, the fantastical creatures, the royal coat of arms. These are not mere decorations. They are whispers from Lisbon’s past, reminders of a city that refused to be broken. Inside, the church is a blend of styles, a reflection of its layered history. Admire the azulejo tilework, the stucco ceiling depicting the Triumph of Our Lady of the Conception, and the gilded retables in the side chapels. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a symbol of hope and rebirth, a story etched in stone and tile.
