Did Kampong Glam always have this vibrant energy? No. Let’s journey back to Singapore of the 1820s. Imagine a quiet fishing village nestled along the Rochor River. This is the origin of Kampong Glam. The name “Kampong Glam” itself speaks volumes. “Kampong” means village, and “Glam” refers to the abundant Gelam trees that once thrived here. Their timber was prized for shipbuilding and their leaves for medicinal oils, crucial elements of early Kampong Glam life. Kampong Glam’s transformation began when it was designated as the residence of Sultan Hussein Shah and his family in 1824. This event solidified Kampong Glam as the heart of Singapore’s Malay community. The land quickly became home to diverse Muslim immigrants from across the region. Mini-kampongs like Kampong Bugis, Kampong Java, and Kampong Malacca sprouted within Kampong Glam, showcasing a rich cultural tapestry. This growth demanded a fitting place of worship. The original mosque, funded in part by Sir Stamford Raffles himself, eventually gave way to the majestic Sultan Mosque in 1924. This architectural masterpiece, with its gleaming gold domes, holds a hidden secret. Take a closer look and you’ll find bands of dark glass bottles encircling the domes. These were donations from the less affluent members of the community, symbolizing unity and shared contribution. Kampong Glam was more than a residential area; it was a crucial stopover for pilgrims journeying to Mecca. Haji Lane, buzzing with trendy shops today, once housed boarding houses offering affordable accommodation to these travelers. This is the origin of the name “Haji Lane,” “haji” being the term for a Muslim who has completed the pilgrimage. Even the Malay Heritage Centre holds a royal history. This building, once the Istana Kampong Glam, served as the palace for the Malay royalty. Within its walls resided generations of sultans, shaping the destiny of Kampong Glam. From a humble fishing village to a royal residence and finally, the vibrant cultural hub we see today, Kampong Glam has truly blossomed. It’s a place where history intertwines with modernity.
