Imagine being transported back to 1950 in Kebayoran Baru. A small group of 40 Catholics gathered in the Hofland family home. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become Gereja Katolik Santa Perawan Maria.
Today Gereja Katolik Santa Perawan Maria stands as a testament to faith. It shows dedication within Jakarta’s Catholic community. Known locally as Gereja Santa it has grown from a small gathering to a parish serving thousands.
In the early 1950s the Catholic community grew. By 1952 it numbered 1500. This surge in numbers highlighted the need for a dedicated church building. Finally in 1955 a plot of land was acquired. This land at Jalan Suryo No 62 became the site for Gereja Santa Perawan Maria Ratu.
Mgr A Djajasepoetra SJ blessed the church. This happened on June 1 1956. The church had a capacity of 400 people. This marked the official founding of Blok Q Parish.
Over the years Gereja Santa Perawan Maria Ratu adapted. It met the needs of its growing congregation. In 1974 the church expanded. It could then accommodate 600 people. A two-story multipurpose hall was also constructed. Mgr Leo Soekoto SJ blessed this new building.
By 1981 Blok Q Parish had grown significantly. It served 29 neighborhoods and 7 regions. The parish had over 5400 members. Discussions began regarding further expansion.
In 2004 Rev JB Martasudjita SJ led a groundbreaking ceremony. This marked the start of constructing a new church building. The expansion was vital due to the increasing number of parishioners at Gereja Katolik Santa Perawan Maria.
A new church was completed in 2006. It featured modern tropical architecture with exposed concrete. It could accommodate 800 people. The original Indo-European-style church was kept. It could still hold 400 worshippers. The old church underwent renovations between August and October 2006.
Today Gereja Santa Perawan Maria Ratu consists of two church buildings. These buildings are connected by a two-story structure. The entire complex covers 3475 square meters. It can accommodate approximately 3000 people.
Gereja Santa strives to be a welcoming place. It offers facilities for disabled and elderly visitors. These include wheelchair access designated seating and accessible restrooms. There are also facilities for women and children including a nursery room.
As you explore Gereja Katolik Santa Perawan Maria consider its journey. From a small gathering to a large parish it reflects faith. It shows community and adaptation. The church is not just a building. It is a living testament to Jakarta’s Catholic heritage. It continues to serve as a spiritual home for many.
