Did you know that Mother McAuley High School has a rich legacy in Chicago, dating back to the very foundation of the city itself? It was founded on the journey of the Sisters of Mercy, who arrived in 1846 and opened a prestigious school dedicated to advancing female education. Situated on a bustling street, this school’s story unfolds with the echoing footsteps of generations of students. Today, you stand before Mother McAuley, a vibrant institution that reflects the dynamic spirit of the city.

The Mercy Sisters’ arrival gave birth to what was originally named St. Francis Xavier Academy for Females, the first chartered school in Chicago. Their mission was to provide a comprehensive education encompassing all levels from primary to collegiate. The first building, located on Wabash Avenue, became a beacon of knowledge. However, destiny threw a curveball in 1871 when the Great Chicago Fire destroyed the original building. Unwavering, they rebuilt, moving to different locations before settling on 49th Street and Cottage Grove in 1900.

By the 1950s, the southwest side of Chicago was experiencing a population boom, demanding a Catholic girls’ school. In 1956, St. Francis Xavier Academy, now referred to as “the Academy,” found its permanent home at 3737 West 99th Street. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and St. Xavier College opened their doors that year, providing secondary and tertiary education, respectively. This new beginning marked an era of expansion. Today, the McAuley community is a bustling hub of energy. The school’s motto is “Empowering courageous women to change the world,” and its graduates have gone on to achieve significant success in various fields.

In its illustrious history, Mother McAuley has fostered a strong community of students, faculty, and staff. From its humble beginnings, it has become an institution that fosters excellence both academically and athletically. Now, it’s an iconic symbol of female empowerment and a vibrant testament to the enduring legacy of the Sisters of Mercy.
