Ever hear of a basketball court nicknamed “The Barn”? Right here in Minneapolis, Williams Arena proudly bears that nickname. Williams Arena has stood as a testament to Golden Gopher basketball since 1928. It’s one of the oldest arenas still actively used in college basketball. Originally called the Minnesota Field House, it later took on the name Williams Arena to honor Henry L. Williams, a legendary Gophers football coach. Williams Arena isn’t just old, it’s unique. The raised floor is a defining feature. Players compete on a court elevated two feet above the ground. This places the benches, scorer’s table, and even the first row of fans below court level. Imagine watching the game practically at the players’ knees. This raised floor, a rarity in modern arenas, was actually an inspiration for the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four setup. The current floor isn’t the original, though. It was replaced in 2009, but the distinct raised design remained. From 1950 to 1971, Williams Arena boasted the largest capacity of any college basketball arena, holding up to 18,025 roaring fans. Even today, with a capacity of 14,625, the energy is palpable. And speaking of energy, the student section, known as “The Barnyard,” is a force to be reckoned with. Their enthusiasm is infectious. And the arched roof, supported by exposed steel beams, truly gives the arena a barn-like feel. Williams Arena has seen its share of history. It hosted the 1951 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament championship game. It has also witnessed the rise of basketball legends, including Kevin McHale. Williams Arena is more than just a basketball venue. It is a beloved piece of Minneapolis history.
