“Seen the snail house?” a resident once asked, perfectly capturing the essence of 沪江别墅. This villa whispers tales of Shanghai’s intricate past. It stands as a testament to lives intertwined within its walls.

沪江别墅, built in 1910, initially served as the residence of Wu Tingfang. He was a learned Mandarin official. He also served as an envoy for the Qing Government in the US, Spain, and Peru. Wu championed Chinese culture. He fought against discrimination faced by Chinese emigrants in America. He even served as foreign minister and acting president under Sun Yat-sen.

Later, the Daxing Tobacco Company took over the villa. It became a factory and dormitory. Eventually, Ding Xiongzhao, the boss of Shanghai Huiming Flashlight Company, purchased it. Ding started his company in 1925. He rose to become the “King of Batteries.” It is unlikely that Ding stayed in Shanghai after 1949. He had amassed wealth and businesses in the US and Europe. Records show him settling in Hong Kong. He passed away there in 1976. The house continued as a dormitory for workers of the Shanghai Huiming. Their descendants still reside here today.

The villa’s current state shows cramped quarters. It also has backward communal amenities. Its facades need upgrades. This is a common sight in Shanghai’s old neighborhoods.

In 2009, 沪江别墅 became a set for the television series “Dwelling Narrowness.” The series depicted two sisters struggling in a city resembling Shanghai. The plot explored their sacrifices to afford a home. One sister became a mistress. The other lived in a small room to save money.

The show touched on the widening gap between rich and poor. It also showed political corruption. It highlighted the erosion of traditional family values. “Dwelling Narrowness” resonated with viewers. They felt chained to mortgages like “house slaves”.

A resident who appeared as an extra in the series spoke of pride and exasperation. He highlighted the original fireplaces and subtle carvings. The TV crew appreciated the house’s authenticity. He hoped the government would too. He did not want to leave. He wheeled his bicycle through the hallway into the sunlight.

Today, 沪江别墅 remains a piece of Shanghai’s living history. It stands as a reminder of lives lived. It also is a reminder of stories etched within its walls. Its aged interior and intricate woodwork tell a story. It is a story of dignitaries, industrialists, and ordinary workers. The villa encapsulates Shanghai’s dynamic spirit. It embodies resilience and adaptation. It is authentic in its imperfections.
