Standing here at Bullock Chapel Church, you can almost hear its history whispering in the breeze. Bullock Chapel Church has been a pillar of faith in Dallas since 1941. It all started with the dream of Mrs. Katie Calicutt. She wanted a Methodist church in the Roosevelt Addition, and her vision, along with the support of Rev. G. R. Patterson, led to its creation. The church was originally called Roosevelt C.M.E. Church, and its construction was a testament to the dedication of the community. Later, the name was changed to Bullock Chapel C.M.E. Church, in honor of Presiding Elder J. B. Bullock, who played a crucial role in its early development. The church started at 2020 Tune Avenue. But, due to heavy flooding, the church had to relocate. In 1973, the property was sold to the city, and the congregation moved to its current location at 3435 E. Overton Rd. Bullock Chapel has been a central hub of strength and spirituality in Dallas for over 80 years. The church has undergone numerous renovations, and its walls hold countless stories of hope, resilience, and faith. Today, you can see the dedication of the flock in every corner of the church, from the intricate stained glass windows to the lovingly maintained sanctuary. Bullock Chapel Church has faced its share of challenges over the years. It has overcome floods, moved locations, and seen its share of economic hardship. But, through it all, the spirit of the congregation remains strong. This is, in part, due to a special project undertaken by the eighth Episcopal District and Presiding Bishop C. D. Coleman in 1975. They provided financial assistance to the church, ensuring its survival during those difficult times. This was followed by a period of remarkable growth under Rev. Earnest Williams. His leadership helped reach a landmark moment in 1984 as the church burned its mortgage note. Bullock Chapel Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a beacon of hope that offers a comforting embrace to its community. The church reflects the dedication of those who built it, embraced it and continue to call it home today.
