Hidden within Auckland’s vibrant landscape, Encounter Christian Centre pulsates with a rich history. Encounter Christian Centre first opened its doors in 1980. It wasn’t always the bustling hub we see today. The church’s roots trace back to the humble beginnings of The Wayside Mission on Queen Street in the 1930s. Founded by Keith Rimmer, the mission focused on street evangelism and discipleship. This laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Encounter Christian Centre. The church’s journey took a significant turn in the 1970s during the Charismatic movement under Owen and Lois Wagener’s leadership. It was then known as Epsom Christian Fellowship. As the congregation expanded, they relocated to Epsom Normal Primary School. A pivotal moment arrived on May 10, 1983, when Brent and Patricia Douglas became the Senior Leaders. Their leadership ushered in an era focused on the power of the Holy Spirit. This led to another move in 1992, this time to Auckland Normal Intermediate. The year 1993 brought the “Toronto Blessing” to a youth camp, marking a transformative period for the church. The outpouring of spiritual renewal led to the annual youth conference, now known as Breakthrough. It was also the time the church adopted its current name, Encounter Christian Centre, emphasizing its mission of “Bringing People into a Dynamic Encounter with Jesus Christ.” Brent Douglas began training leaders throughout New Zealand, further spreading the church’s influence. Music became integral to their worship, leading to the production of several albums. The desire for a permanent home led to the purchase of a building on Morningside Drive in 2002 for offices and midweek gatherings. A few years later, the fulfillment of a 23-year-old prophecy came to pass with the acquisition of 495 Rosebank Road. After extensive renovations, the first service at the new location took place on April 23, 2006. Today, Encounter Christian Centre stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. Led by Brent and Patricia Douglas for over 30 years, the church continues to thrive, with Sunday services at 10 am and 6 pm. Their influence extends beyond Auckland, with affiliated churches in Bream Bay and Levin. Encounter Christian Centre remains a beacon of faith, impacting lives within its walls and reaching out to the wider community.
