Picture Tlalpan’s main square bathed in sunlight. Feel the warmth on your skin. The Plaza de la Constitucion better known as the Jardin Principal is a vibrant heart. It pulses with life. It’s more than just a pretty square. It’s a living testament to Tlalpan’s rich history. This is Tlalpan center the heart of a borough that spans far beyond this charming plaza.

Tlalpan a borough of Mexico City boasts a captivating blend of pre-Hispanic roots colonial charm and modern growth. It’s the largest borough in Mexico City a sprawling expanse of mountains forests and urban neighborhoods. Tlalpan’s name itself is derived from the Nahuatl language meaning “place on the earth”. It reflects its central location at a crossroads of ancient trade routes.

This central square has been a gathering place for centuries. Before the Spanish conquest this village was a significant pre-Hispanic settlement. It connected Tenochtitlan now Mexico City with southern regions. Then in 1645 it was renamed Villa de San Agustin de las Cuevas. This new name honors the patron saint San Agustin and the many caves formed by the eruption of the Xitle volcano centuries before. The impact of this volcanic eruption is still visible today. It created the rich volcanic soil and unique landscape that shapes Tlalpan.

Many of the buildings surrounding the Jardin Principal are over a hundred years old. Some are colonial-era mansions now repurposed as cafes restaurants and even museums. Others are significant historic structures. They bear witness to Tlalpan’s role as the capital of the State of Mexico for a brief period in the 19th century. See the Palacio de Gobierno the former government palace. It stands proudly facing the plaza. It served as a government seat barracks and even a residence for Empress Carlota. Today it houses the borough’s administrative offices.

Here in the square itself stands the Arbol de los Colgados the Tree of the Hanged. This ancient tree remains alive today a silent witness to a darker past. During the French Intervention in Mexico political enemies and bandits were hanged from its branches.

Close by you’ll also find the 18th-century San Agustin Church. It stands beside a tranquil atrium. It is shaded by fruit trees. While a fire at the end of the 19th century destroyed the original Baroque altar the church retains its serene beauty. It hosts the borough’s largest religious event the annual San Agustin de las Cuevas Festival.

Tlalpan is more than just its historic center. It’s home to one of the oldest Mesoamerican sites Cuicuilco. Its vast forests and parks provide vital ecological services. They also offer ample opportunities for recreation and exploration. The borough’s unique blend of history ecology and culture makes it a truly captivating destination. Enjoy the provincial atmosphere of Tlalpan. It offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of larger parts of Mexico City.
