Can you feel the echoes of faith resonating from this very spot? Here, at the 1st Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago, a powerful story of resilience and devotion unfolds. The 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church wasn’t always located on Kenwood Avenue. Its journey began humbly in 1951 with nine devoted members gathering in a home on South Forestville Avenue. Imagine those early services, filled with fervent prayer and shared dreams of a dedicated space for worship. In 1952, their prayers were answered with the acquisition of a building on South Princeton Avenue. The church elected Rev. J.P. Sloane as their first pastor. This marked a significant step in the 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church’s history, a testament to their growing congregation and unwavering faith. However, their journey didn’t end there. The congregation continued to expand under the leadership of several pastors. This led to another move, this time to their current home on Kenwood Avenue in 1960. This building, formerly owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, became the new spiritual home for the flourishing 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church. The church prospered under Rev. S.M. Hart’s leadership until his passing in 1985. The 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church faced numerous challenges over the years. Yet through it all, they remained steadfast in their faith. Even a period of transition between locations, during a challenging time with decreasing membership and a global pandemic, could not shake their spirit. They worshipped at temporary locations, guided by their faith and the support of visiting ministers. The 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church continues to thrive today under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Odel Sterling III. His message of trust and hope resonates with the congregation. The church’s restored facade stands as a symbol of their enduring faith, a beacon of hope in the heart of Chicago. The 1st Mount Calvary Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the power of faith, community, and resilience.
