Yves Farge. A name etched onto the boulevard before us. It speaks of a man who walked the tightrope of wartime France, a journalist, a resistance fighter, a politician. Boulevard Yves Farge. It stretches out, a long thoroughfare connecting the past with the present. This boulevard, named in 1957, originally bore the less evocative title of “Rue de Marseille prolongée”. It’s a main artery through the La Mouche and Gerland districts, mirroring the north-south trajectory of Avenue Jean-Jaurès and Rue de Gerland further east. This area, since the 19th century, has borne the distinct mark of industry and military presence. Yves Farge, the man himself, was born in 1899. He was a journalist for Le Progrès newspaper right here in Lyon. He became deeply involved in the resistance, a key figure in the “Franc-Tireur” movement. He even played a part in the perilous Maquis du Vercors operation. This boulevard, in a way, echoes the length and complexity of his life. Imagine Farge, right here on this very spot, during the tense days of the German occupation. He lived nearby, at 37 Rue Bugeaud. From there, he orchestrated clandestine meetings, plotting the city’s liberation. In 1944, he became the Commissaire de la République for the Rhône-Alpes region. He faced down the German commandant of Montluc prison, securing the release of 800 prisoners without a shot fired. A feat of courage and diplomacy that prevented another massacre like the one at Saint-Genis-Laval. Later, he became Minister of Supplies, battling corruption and the black market in post-war France. He fought against those who profited from the nation’s hardship. His unwavering commitment to justice led him to the presidency of the Peace Movement. A role that took him to the Soviet Union, where his life met a tragic, and perhaps suspicious, end in a car accident in 1953. Boulevard Yves Farge. It’s more than just a road. It’s a testament to a man who fought for his country, for justice, and for peace. As you walk along this boulevard, consider the weight of history it carries, the echoes of a life lived in extraordinary times.
