Shrieks and clanking chains. That’s the soundtrack welcoming you to the Ghost Museum Penang. Located on Malay Street this wonderfully weird place offers a chilling escape from Penang’s heat. Forget heritage streets for an hour. This three-storey museum plunges you into a world of ghoulish models and scary stories. Realistic zombie rooms await.
The Ghost Museum isn’t your typical George Town experience. It’s a journey through ghostly and supernatural displays. Stories from Malaysia China Egypt and Japan fill its halls. There are also sections devoted to Halloween Dracula and zombie attacks. The museum attempts to convey the mythology and history of each genre. Some translated text may be a little unclear though.
Expect excellent craftsmanship and intricate details. The displays are incredibly detailed. The Zombie Attack room on the top floor is particularly impressive. The dining room scene is another highlight. Watch out for those portraits that come to life on the wall. If you’re brave enough you can even dress up in costumes. There are plenty of photo opportunities. The more interactive you are the more you’ll enjoy the Ghost Museum.
Parents should check the Zombie zone before taking young children. This area is the most disturbing and realistic. It’s easily avoided if necessary. The museum doesn’t have an official age limit. However most kids under ten will find it too scary. It’s geared towards late teens and early twenties horror fans.
Allow about 45 minutes for a visit unless you plan on dressing up and taking lots of pictures. The Ghost Museum might not be essential if you only have one day in Penang. There are many other sights to see. It is also expensive for the length of time you’ll spend there. However if you have more time or a genuine interest in ghosts horror and the supernatural it’s worth a visit. The Ghost Museum is a truly unique and strange experience. It’s weird but wonderful at least for an hour or so.
