Imagine a Norse longboat atop a weather vane. It dances in the wind high above the Norwegian Seamen’s Church.

Welcome to the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in London. It is more than just a church. It’s a piece of Norway nestled in the heart of London. This church has been a vital part of the Norwegian community here for centuries.

Let’s step back to the late 17th century. That’s when the first Norwegian church appeared in London. The current building named St. Olav’s was consecrated in 1927. Crown Prince Olav later King Olav V of Norway laid its foundation stone.

The Norwegian Seamen’s Church aimed to serve the many Norwegian sailors visiting London’s docks. Ships sailed from Norway bringing timber and deals. The sailors needed a place for religious solace and community. The church offered a moral compass. It kept them from the temptations of bars and brothels. It became a parish church for Norwegians living in London.

Initially, the Ebenezer Church served both Norwegian and Swedish sailors. Norway and Sweden were united back then. When the union dissolved in 1905 a separate Swedish Seamen’s Mission was founded.

By the 1920s, the Ebenezer Church felt too remote. Norwegians from all over London struggled to reach it. A new plot of land was bought near the Rotherhithe Tunnel entrance. This new location would be more accessible.

King and Queen of Norway attended a service here. This celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2002. The Norwegian Seamen’s Church holds a Scandinavian Christmas Fair every year. The Finnish Church joins in this fair. They sell Scandinavian arts, crafts and food.

During World War II, the Norwegian government in exile worshipped here. The church gained pro-cathedral status. It became a Grade II listed building in 1949. John Love Seaton DAHL designed this church.

Inside, the church offers a sense of belonging. Every Sunday about 100 Norwegians attend the service. Traditional waffles, cakes and coffee follow the ceremony. Throughout the week, the church buzzes with activity. Mother and toddler groups meet here. There is also a ladies’ club and a Saturday school.

Today, Rector Torbjørn Holt travels around the UK. He visits offices, homes and networking events. He connects with Norwegian students. His mission is for the church to be a home for the community.

The Norwegian Seamen’s Church in London remains a vibrant hub. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Norwegian community. It offers a sense of home away from home. As you leave, remember the longboat on the steeple. It symbolizes the journey, faith and community that define this special place.
