“Ya’ gotta have friends,” and this library embodies that spirit. Here at the Edgewater Branch Library, we celebrate community and the power of shared knowledge.

This branch has a history rooted in the tireless efforts of local activists. The Edgewater Branch Library opened its doors on June 22, 2013. But its story began long before. It replaced an older branch that served the community since April 14, 1973.

Back in the 1960s, the Edgewater Community Council recognized a need. There was no dedicated library in Edgewater. Only occasional visits from a bookmobile. Betty Barclay, a founding member of the ECC, championed the cause. She fought to bring a library to Edgewater. Her dedication led to the formation of the Friends of the Edgewater Library.

Betty and her fellow volunteers organized used book sales. They promoted the library’s services. They advocated for improvements because Edgewater readers had outgrown the first branch.

In late 1989, Betty Barclay gathered neighbors. They aimed to support the Chicago Public Library’s Edgewater Branch. On May 6, 1990, the Friends of the Edgewater Library officially became a non-profit organization. The Friends actively supported the construction of a new, modern library. They paused their activities temporarily while the new facility was built.

While the library was under reconstruction, the 48th Ward office took action. They formed a committee to address the community’s reading needs. Edgewater Reads was created. They began building Little Edgewater Libraries. These small, free-standing libraries are located throughout Edgewater. People can freely take or leave books. The Friends of the Edgewater Library supports Edgewater Reads by donating unsold books.

Throughout its history, the Friends have been dedicated fundraisers. They use book sales, memberships, sponsorships, and donations. This supports the library’s programs and operations. They purchase materials like DVDs and books. They fund programs for children, teens, and adults.

In April 2018, the Edgewater branch dedicated its community room. It was named in memory of Betty A. Barclay. Betty advocated for the construction of both the first and the new Edgewater Branch Library.

The Edgewater Branch Library also embraces sustainability. Its construction incorporates environmentally friendly design. It uses the LEED Green Building Rating System.

The Friends of the Edgewater Library meet regularly. They gather in the Betty A. Barclay Community Room. Community members are welcome to attend meetings and participate in projects.

So, as you step inside the Edgewater Branch Library, remember its history. Remember the dedication of Betty Barclay and the Friends. It is more than just a building filled with books. It’s a testament to the power of community and the love of reading.
