Beneath the serene facade of St. Theodard lies a tale of martyrdom. It is a story of justice, and a legacy that echoes through the ages. Today, we stand before St. Theodard. This church bears the name of a 7th-century bishop.
Theodard of Maastricht lived around 602. He was born near Speyer in Germany. Theodard was a disciple of Remaclus at the monastery of Stavelot in Belgium. Around 653, Remaclus became bishop of Tongeren-Maastricht. Theodard then succeeded him as abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy. In 663, Remaclus retired to Stavelot. Theodard succeeded him as bishop of Maastricht.
Imagine Theodard. He was known as a cheerful and likeable person. He carried out his role as bishop with great energy. He was known for his pastoral care. As bishop, he built and restored churches. He also founded monasteries. Theodard promoted evangelization. He was also known for his charity.
But his life took a tragic turn. Around 670, Theodard journeyed through the Bienwald forest near Speyer. He sought justice from King Childeric II of Austrasia. Frankish nobles were plundering his diocese. Theodard was murdered on his way to confront the king. It is suspected that the nobles orchestrated his death.
Because Theodard was murdered, he was honored as a martyr. He died defending the rights of the Church. Initially, he was buried at the murder scene in Rülzheim. Later, his nephew Lambert of Maastricht moved the body to Liege.
The site of his original burial became a pilgrimage site. A chapel was built there. It was called the “Dieterskirchel”. Anselm of Liège mentions a church built in honor of St. Theodard. This occurred in the eleventh century. A larger church replaced it in the fourteenth century. But it was later demolished.
St. Theodard is venerated as the patron saint of drovers. He is also the patron saint of cattle dealers. The city of Maastricht also recognizes him as their patron. His feast day is September 10.
Consider Theodard’s lasting impact. He stood against injustice. He protected his diocese. His legacy lives on through this church. It is a reminder of his courage. It is a testament to his unwavering faith. It is a symbol of his dedication to his people.
