Can you imagine a park that doubles as a giant bathtub? Right here at Greenslade Reserve, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Greenslade Reserve isn’t just your average park. It’s a vital part of Northcote’s stormwater management system, cleverly disguised as a recreational haven. This 1.5-hectare space sits at the southern end of the Te Ara Awataha greenway, a revitalized waterway that was once confined to pipes. The reserve’s transformation in 2022 was remarkable. The entire playing field was lowered by one to two meters. This created a massive retention pond, capable of holding 12 million liters of stormwater. Imagine that, 12 million liters. This innovative design helps protect surrounding streets and properties from flooding during heavy rain. The upgrade also included a free-draining sports field, floodwalls, an urban wetland, and a shared path connecting to the Te Ara Awataha greenway. Greenslade Reserve was put to the test just months after its reopening, during Auckland’s largest recorded rainstorm in January 2023. The reserve filled to its capacity, holding back the deluge. By the next afternoon, the water had drained away, and locals were back enjoying the park. Greenslade Reserve demonstrates how urban spaces can be designed for both recreation and resilience. It’s a testament to innovative engineering and a vital part of Northcote’s flood protection strategy.
