You find yourself in the bustling 19th arrondissement, a vibrant district brimming with life. Stop for a moment and look closely at the wall at number 16, rue de Nantes. You will find a plaque, a simple yet powerful tribute – The Serge Grivillers Plaque. Serge Grivillers, a metal turner by trade, was a fervent member of the French Communist Party. He was also a key figure in the Resistance movement. He fought tirelessly against the Nazi occupation, using his skills to sabotage German operations. In July 1944, Serge was captured, tortured, and ultimately hanged by the Nazis. His death was a tragic loss for the Resistance movement. This plaque serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and honors the memory of a true hero. It reads: “Serge Grivillers, tortured and hanged by the Nazis on July 21, 1944, at the age of 35”. This small tribute on the wall is a testament to the resilience and courage of those who fought for freedom, and a crucial part of our understanding of this important period in history.
