Tragedy struck New Friendship Baptist Church. Two parishioners were shot dead on the steps. This happened one Sunday morning just as a service was about to begin.
New Friendship Baptist Church has a rich history. It’s a significant part of Chicago’s cultural fabric. The church’s story begins long ago. It started with Reverend Knight and Reverend Coleman. They organized the Friendship Baptist Church in March 1897.
The church has moved several times. This was due to growth and the need for larger spaces. In 1962 they bought property on West Douglas Boulevard. They moved into a new home on July 29 1962. A motorcade of over 100 cars marked the occasion. Later in 1983 the congregation moved again to 5200 West Jackson Boulevard. They moved under the cover of darkness. This was to emulate the Israelites leaving Egypt. A new building was dedicated on Easter Sunday. The mortgage was burned in 1987. This was a moment of great joy and celebration for the church.
Rev Shelvin Jerome Hall served as pastor for 51 years. He was a highly respected leader. His words “If I am to Pastor then let me Pastor” are remembered. He passed away in 2007. His wife Lucy Mae Hall had also been a dedicated member. She passed away just 20 days before him. They had served the church for many years.
Reverend Reginald E Bachus became the eighth pastor. He arrived in 2006. He oversaw many improvements to the church. These included renovations and upgrades to the building. He also implemented new ministries and programs. This was to serve the community’s needs.
The shooting was a devastating event. It shook the congregation and the community. It is a reminder of the challenges faced in the city. However the spirit of New Friendship Baptist Church remains strong. It continues its mission to serve God and its community. The church is a testament to faith resilience and hope.
