Amidst the grandeur of Mainz, stands the Erthaler Hof. A silent witness to centuries of history, this palace whispers tales of influential families, political intrigues, and architectural innovation. The Erthaler Hof isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule, ready to transport us back to the 18th century. The Erthaler Hof was commissioned by Philipp Christoph von Erthal. He was not only a nobleman but also a skilled architect. Construction began in 1734 and concluded in 1739. Von Erthal, having studied under the renowned French architect Germain Boffrand, infused the design with a distinctive French classicist style. This elegant style set it apart from the typical south German-Austrian Baroque prevalent in Mainz at the time. Look closely at the facade. You’ll notice two three-story pavilions connected by a lower central structure. This is a modified version of the “Dreirisalitschema,” a common architectural design. The central gable proudly displays the coats of arms of the Erthal and Bettendorff families. A testament to the union between Philipp Christoph and his wife, Maria Eva von Bettendorff. Inside, remarkably preserved stucco ceilings and wall paneling adorn the main hall and staircase. Their intricate designs blend elements of Bandelwerk and Rocaille. They reveal a unique transitional phase in decorative art. These fire-resistant ceilings also protected the interiors from the ravages of World War II bombings. The Erthaler Hof played many roles throughout its history. After the fall of the Electorate of Mainz, it served as the prefecture for the French Département du Mont-Tonnerre. From 1816 to 1945, it housed the provincial administration of Rheinhessen. It then became home to the district government of Rheinhessen, and later the administration of the newly formed Mainz-Bingen district. A significant event took place within these walls on July 12, 1816. The handover of territories west of the Rhine to the Grand Duchy of Hesse occurred in the Erthaler Hof’s grand hall. This marked the birth of the Rheinhessen province and solidified the palace’s role in regional history. Today, the Erthaler Hof continues its legacy. It houses the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate. Its meticulously restored facade stands as a model for historically sensitive renovation. The Erthaler Hof serves as a reminder that history isn’t just found in textbooks. It lives and breathes in the buildings around us.
