Slipping through the narrow embrace of Kanal Daksa, haven’t you felt a chill? It’s more than just the sea breeze. Kanal Daksa is a watery pathway, a strait that separates the mainland from the small, uninhabited island of Daksa. This seemingly tranquil channel holds a dark secret, a story whispered on the winds that whip across its surface. Daksa, the island just a stone’s throw away, was once home to a Franciscan monastery, built in 1281. Its serene image belies a tragic event etched into its history: the Daksa massacre. In late October 1944, as World War II raged, Yugoslav partisans entered Dubrovnik. They rounded up hundreds, accusing them of being Nazi sympathizers. Among them was Dubrovnik’s mayor, Niko Koprivica. A group of these accused individuals, as many as 53, were taken to Daksa. They were executed without trial, their bodies left where they fell. The island became a silent testament to this horrific act. Years passed, and the story of Daksa faded into whispers, the island shunned. Then, in 2009, a chilling discovery. Authorities unearthed the remains of six victims. The Daksa 1944/45 Association soon announced the discovery of a mass grave containing 48 bodies. The island’s tragic past resurfaced, demanding acknowledgment. Finally, in 2010, the remains were re-interred, offering a measure of peace to the victims and their families. As you glide through Kanal Daksa, remember the island of Daksa. It is a stark reminder of the shadows that can lurk beneath even the most beautiful surfaces. The tranquil waters carry the weight of history, a silent echo of the lives tragically lost.
