Picture this The Weserpark in Bremen a sprawling shopping center. It’s not just any mall. It’s a testament to Bremen’s entrepreneurial spirit. A place where history and commerce blend.
Weserpark opened in March 1990. It was unique. It was the first of its kind in Germany. A shopping center combining large specialty stores with smaller shops. Think a giant marketplace under one roof. This innovative concept was the brainchild of Bremen businessman Werner Steenken. A street leading to the Weserpark is named after him.
The Weserpark wasn’t just about shopping. A year after opening the Aquadrom water park appeared. Families flocked to its waves and slides. It was later transformed into the Oase a large sauna and fitness facility. That’s another smart-aleck fact. Sadly it was planned to close at the end of 2022.
The Weserpark continuously expanded. A home goods store opened in 1996. Thirty more shops soon joined the growing center. The Weserpark changed from a specialty store complex to a hybrid shopping center. A gas station even opened on the grounds.
In 1999 the Kristallpalast cinema and entertainment complex opened. It quickly became Bremen’s largest movie theater. It also offers bowling and an indoor playground. What’s even more impressive is that the Weserpark underwent major renovations in 2003-2004 and 2012-2014. These upgrades added around 12000 square meters of usable space. Parking spaces even moved to the roof.
Today Weserpark is huge. It boasts roughly 170 stores. It includes well known names like Zara H&M and Media Markt. The food court has 450 seats. The Weserpark caters to families with a large children’s play area. It even provides free wifi and electric car charging stations.
Weserpark hosts various events. These include the Osterholz trade show. There are also antique markets car shows and even fashion shows. Famous musicians television personalities and athletes have graced these fashion shows. Since 2019 a darts tournament takes place. Professional players compete for the Weserpark Darts Cup.
The Weserpark is more than just a shopping destination. It is a vital part of Bremen’s history and identity. It is a hub of activity providing shopping entertainment and employment. The Weserpark continues to evolve proving its place as a keystone of Bremen’s landscape.
