Opened in 1928, Kelly High School stands as a landmark in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood. It has witnessed generations of students walk its halls. Initially, Kelly High School served as a junior high. But in 1933, the Chicago Board of Education transformed it into the senior high school we know today. It’s the third largest public high school in Chicago. Kelly High School proudly bears the name of Irish nationalist Thomas J. Kelly. The school’s mascot, the Trojan, reflects its spirit and competitive drive. Kelly High School serves over 1900 students. A vast majority, over 80%, are Hispanic. The school colors are green and white, symbolizing growth and unity. Kelly High School athletes compete in the Chicago Public League (CPL). They’re also part of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), showcasing their athletic prowess across the state. Kelly High School’s alumni have made significant contributions to various fields. Major League pitcher Kevin Hickey, actor Ron Masak, and polka bandleader Lenny Gomulka all once roamed these halls. Even former Wisconsin state representative John Joseph Ryba and American Football League player Joe Young are among its distinguished graduates. Kelly High School offers a diverse curriculum. It includes International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, and AVID college prep programs. They also have a freshman academy, award-winning performing arts programs, and bilingual services in Chinese and Spanish. Students can explore creative outlets like animation, graphic design, and music. They can participate in leadership programs, activism clubs, and community service initiatives. This helps them prepare for a bright future. Kelly High School’s commitment to education goes beyond academics. They provide support services like crisis intervention, nutrition programs, and targeted interventions. Parents and the community are also actively involved. They offer workshops, classes, and support groups that enrich the overall educational experience. Despite facing challenges, Kelly High School continually strives to improve. In the 2013-14 school year, every graduating senior applied to at least one college, a significant milestone. By the following year, all seniors applied to three or more schools, and 80% of those applications were to colleges matching students’ qualifications. This demonstrates the school’s dedication to preparing its students for higher education.
