“Can you believe this unassuming station has been around since 1958?” This is Jiangqiao Town Station. It stands as a testament to Shanghai’s evolving railway network.
Jiangqiao Town Station is in the Jiading District of Shanghai. It’s a railway station on the Beijing-Shanghai Railway. But it does not handle passenger transport anymore. Instead, it plays a vital role in connecting different railway lines.
Initially, Jiangqiao Town Station served as a crucial junction. It linked the Nanhe Railway and the Huning Railway. The Nanhe line branched from Nanxiang Station. It passed through this station before turning north.
In 1984, the Baoshan Iron and Steel Plant boosted Nanhe Line’s traffic. This increased traffic led to congestion. The level crossing of the two lines caused bottlenecks. In 1986, a solution was found. Construction began on the Jiangqiao Railway Overpass. This overpass would allow trains to pass over the station. The project completed on December 31, 1987. This significantly improved traffic flow.
In 2009, Jiangqiao Town Station underwent further modifications. This was to accommodate the Huning Intercity Railway’s integration. These upgrades included track adjustments. The Jiangqiao Railway Overpass also got new beams.
After the renovations, the tracks were rearranged. They run from north to south. The Jinghu Railway’s down line is first. Then comes the Huning Intercity’s down line. Next is the Huning Intercity’s up line. Finally, there is the Jinghu Railway’s up line. A small transport line also exists. It is the Huning Ring Line.
Interestingly, Jiangqiao Town Station was the site of an incident in 2009. A train bound for Nanjing experienced a malfunction. The train’s wheels rubbed against the tracks. This caused smoke and an emergency stop. Passengers feared an explosion. They evacuated the train. Fortunately, workers fixed the issue within an hour. The train continued its journey.
Today, Jiangqiao Town Station continues its operations. It ensures the smooth flow of trains. It stands as a silent witness to Shanghai’s growth. It connects regions and facilitates transportation.
