“Did you ever wonder where locals find solace amidst city life?” That’s Gorbitzer Park. It is nestled in the Gorbitz district between Kesselsdorfer Strasse Wölfnitzer and Altgorbitzer Ring. This park offers a green escape crafted in the 1990s.
Gorbitzer Park is more than just a park. It is a testament to community and recreation. The park’s design features a hilly landscape. It also has winding paths that invite exploration. Benches are thoughtfully placed under trees offering spots for quiet contemplation.
But that is not all. Gorbitzer Park encourages activity. You can find two table tennis tables. For the adventurous the park has small climbing rocks for bouldering. These rocks appeared between November 2013 and April 2014. This was during a significant renovation. Before the climbing rocks a halfpipe stood here. It catered to skateboarders inline skaters and BMX riders.
In 2020 Gorbitzer Park saw further improvements. A new pavilion and more climbing rocks were added in the southern part. Children can enjoy new play equipment in the northern section near Elbamare. Right in the middle a new seating area was constructed.
An interesting fact about Gorbitzer Park is its drainage system. It lies beneath the paths. Over time this system became clogged. However improvements have been made. Now there are two water cisterns for rainwater storage.
Beyond Gorbitzer Park itself the surrounding area of Gorbitz offers more attractions. A streetsport facility opened between Coventrystrasse and Omsewitzer Ring. Here you can play football basketball and table tennis. It also features a unique skater area. Liquid concrete was shot into the area with air pressure to create freeform elements. Skilled workers then shaped the concrete by hand.
For football enthusiasts a new sports field is available at the 139th elementary school since 2022. A fitness course called Fitness-Oase was also created on Leutewitzer Ring in the same year. This offers various equipment for muscle building.
Community spirit thrives in the community garden on Espenstrasse. Since 2020 a natural pond has enriched the garden. It is open year-round for residents.
As you stroll through Gorbitzer Park consider its evolution. From a simple green space to a hub for sports recreation and community Gorbitzer Park embodies the spirit of Gorbitz. It is a place where memories are made. It is a place for both young and old to enjoy.
