Opened in 1926 by King George V and Prince Albert, Kings House Sports Ground has a rich history. Originally known as the Civil Service Sports Ground, it hosted its first recorded match the same year. The Civil Service cricket team played against Australia. The very next year, Kings House Sports Ground held its only first-class cricket match. The Civil Service team played against the touring New Zealanders. Kings House Sports Ground is more than just cricket. It boasts a diverse sporting legacy. The ground has been home to the Civil Service Football Club since its opening. This club is the sole surviving amateur football club from the original eleven clubs that founded the Football Association in 1863. The Civil Service Rugby Club, another long-term resident of the ground, is a founding member of the Rugby Football Union. Fast forward to 2010, King’s House School took over management of the grounds. The school has overseen numerous developments. These include the addition of a FIFA and RFU approved 3G pitch in 2015 and a new all-weather pitch in 2021. The latter became the home of London Wayfarers Hockey Club, the largest hockey club in the country. Kings House Sports Ground also embraces community involvement. It’s home to Grenfell Athletic FC, founded after the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. The club provides a space for the community to come together through football. In 2023, a partnership with Cadbury FC launched the “Common Ground” pitch at Kings House Sports Ground. This further solidified the ground’s commitment to community healing and sport. Even England’s Men’s Senior Rugby Squad has trained here, holding a two-day camp in 2022 with an open training session for local children.
