Gazing upon the Heizkraftwerk Freimann, one might mistake its imposing structure for a modern fortress. However, instead of housing soldiers and weaponry, this giant provides a different kind of essential resource: energy. The Heizkraftwerk Freimann is a combined heat and power plant located in the Schwabing-Freimann district of Munich. Established in 1974, this plant has been a cornerstone of Munich’s energy infrastructure for decades. The Heizkraftwerk Freimann originally utilized two gas turbines to generate electricity and heat using natural gas. This method allowed the plant to achieve impressive output, reaching a maximum district heating output of 400 MW and an electrical output of 160 MW. The electrical energy was then fed into the 110-kV high-voltage grid of the distribution grid operator, SWM Infrastruktur. Although the original gas turbines were decommissioned in 2015, the story of Heizkraftwerk Freimann didn’t end there. Two new gas turbines were installed in 2018, marking a new chapter in the plant’s life. Each with an electrical output of 50 MW and a thermal output of 125 MW, these new turbines demonstrate the city’s commitment to modern and efficient energy solutions. A distinctive feature of the Heizkraftwerk Freimann is its 18 prominent heat accumulators that dominate the skyline. These towering structures serve as buffer storage for district heating, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of heat to the city. The Heizkraftwerk Freimann stands as a testament to Munich’s forward-thinking approach to energy production, blending modern technology with a commitment to sustainability.
