Whispers of history echo around us here at Baikaiji Temple. Established in 1929, Baikaiji Temple began its journey. It wasn’t always called Baikaiji Temple.
The story begins with a strong desire. In 1901 residents in the Yokohama area wanted a preaching hall. Their fervent wishes led to action. In 1907 the Yokohama Preaching Hall of the Honganji sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism was opened. It stood in what is now Yokohama Nishi Assembly Hall.
But the true story of Baikaiji Temple starts later. In 1930智笄熊谷 was welcomed as the first resident priest. This marked the true beginning of Baikaiji Temple in name and reality.
In 1991 the temple underwent renovations. The inner sanctuary was expanded to commemorate the appointment of the second resident priest. The sanctuary was adorned with vibrant colors.
Baikaiji Temple also remembers Shinran. In 2008 a grand memorial service marked the 750th anniversary of Shinran. The main hall’s large roof was re-roofed. That brings us to the present day.
This coastal area has a tradition. Every morning people gather for “constant tide” events. Baikaiji Temple holds morning services that begin at 7 AM.
Ten services are performed annually. These are special occasions for the community. Baikaiji Temple continues to be a place of worship. It stands as a testament to faith and community. It connects the past with the present.
Remember the resilience of Hiroshima. Baikaiji Temple shows us how communities rebuild and thrive. It is a story of faith and dedication.
