What if you could walk through our solar system in Kassel? Welcome to the Planetenwanderweg Venus. This unique path is a scaled-down model of our solar system. It lets you experience the vast distances between planets. The scale is 1:495 million.
The Planetenwanderweg Venus starts at the Orangerie. The sun is represented by a circle in the floor. From there you walk past tiny representations of Mercury and Venus. Both are about the size of a hazelnut. Next comes the Earth about the size of a walnut.
You continue along the axis of the Karlsaue. The next stop is Mars under the oak tree alley. Then you’ll find Jupiter. Jupiter is a golden sphere on the roof of a small temple. It sits on Schwaneninsel island. Saturn and Uranus lie outside the Karlsaue. To reach Neptune you have to go much farther. You have to walk to the R1 cycle path in Guntershausen.
The Planetenwanderweg Venus isn’t just about seeing the planets. It’s about understanding scale. The distance from the sun to Earth is relatively short on the path. The distances grow dramatically as you move to the outer planets. For example the distance between Jupiter and Saturn is almost 700 meters. This shows the vastness of our solar system. The Planetenwanderweg Venus opened in 1996. Its last part was finished in 2021. It’s a great way to learn about space while enjoying a walk.
Imagine yourself standing before the Venus model. Feel the smoothness of the stainless steel. Notice the engraved parameters. This isn’t just a walk it’s a journey. It’s a journey through the cosmos right here in Kassel. Don’t miss this unique experience. The Planetenwanderweg Venus truly brings the solar system to life.
