“Lost in thought?” a voice startled me. I blinked, turning to face a fellow student outside 一号公寓. 一号公寓, or “Number One Apartment,” wasn’t exactly known for its grandeur. It housed us, the overflow of Shanghai University’s ever-growing student body. We weren’t nestled in some historic building, but the practicality of 一号公寓 held its own charm. Xinshikong Apartments, another name I heard used, was technically a condo hotel. It offered fully equipped kitchens, a real luxury for students. Imagine whipping up a late-night stir-fry after cramming for exams, instead of relying on instant noodles. Some units even had balconies, perfect for catching a glimpse of the city. Though a few miles from Jing’an Temple and Jade Buddha Temple, 一号公寓 was surprisingly well-connected. We were a short hop from the metro, opening up the entire city to our explorations. While lacking historical weight, 一号公寓 held a different significance. It was a melting pot of cultures and dreams, a temporary home for those of us striving to make our mark in Shanghai. The 24-hour front desk, a lifesaver for late-night study sessions, became our unofficial hub. We swapped stories, shared anxieties, and celebrated small victories, forming a unique bond within the walls of 一号公寓. For many, it was our first taste of independence, our launchpad into the vibrant energy of Shanghai. So, while it might not have the historical cachet of other landmarks, 一号公寓 holds its own special place in our hearts.
