The rhythmic whir of machinery echoes in my mind. I see Lee Rubber. It stands before you a testament to Penang’s industrial past.

Lee Rubber Factory once the largest rubber factory in Penang operated for 50 years. It was a bustling hub of activity. Workers processed raw rubber transforming it into valuable sheets. The factory’s blue roof was a familiar landmark in Paya Terubong Valley.

The factory’s story is intertwined with the Lee family’s entrepreneurial legacy. Founded by Lee Kong Chiang a Singaporean entrepreneur and philanthropist the Lee Rubber Company expanded rapidly. It became a multi-million dollar business involved in rubber pineapples and canning. The company’s expansion led to factories across Malaya and Indonesia. Even today Lee Rubber remains a significant player in Malaysia’s rubber output.

But this particular factory in Penang closed in 2012. The company consolidated production in mainland factories closer to raw materials. Penang’s commercial rubber production ceased. Raw materials were transported from outside the island. This brought an end to an era a chapter in Penang’s history.

Imagine the sights sounds and smells of the factory. The pungent odor of rubber. The clanking of machinery. Workers diligently performing skilled labor. Rubber trees were tapped diagonally downwards from left to right maximizing latex extraction. This was skilled work crucial for the tree’s longevity. Mechanization proved impossible. Human skill was essential.

The process involved challenges. Contamination was a perpetual problem due to lax quality standards in rubber collection. Environmental concerns like odor and pollution also emerged. This factory’s closure highlighted these issues.

Mr Ooi Boon Chye the Quality Assurance Manager dedicated 43 years to Lee Rubber. He provided a fascinating presentation on the rubber business. He described the rubber tree its distinctive leaves and its economic lifespan. He explained how rubber’s use evolved after Goodyear’s vulcanization process. Transportation became the main driver of rubber demand.

Today only faint traces of Lee Rubber remain. But its legacy continues. It’s a reminder of Penang’s industrial heritage and the Lee family’s impact. The closing of this factory marked a turning point in Penang’s economic landscape. It’s a story of growth challenges and ultimately closure. A story etched in the memory of Penang.
