Ever wondered about the secrets hidden beneath the calm surface of Stilling-Solbjerg Lake? This isn’t just another pretty body of water. It is a place steeped in history and legend. Here we are at Stilling-Solbjerg Lake.

The lake stretches seven kilometers. It acts as the upper section of the Aarhus River. Locals call it by different names. In Stilling, it is Stilling Lake. In Solbjerg, it’s Solbjerg Lake. Near Fregerslev, it answers to Fregerslev Lake.

Stilling-Solbjerg Lake is a protected area. This protection, established in the mid-1960s, includes the lake and Pilbrodalen valley. Not every part of the lake is easily accessible. But, Stilling and Solbjerg offer recreational spots with jetties and benches. If you are coming from the north, Sørgårde provides access. Restaurant Stilling Sø sits on the southern shore.

Now, let me share a legend. During the Torstensson War against Sweden in the 1640s, King Christian IV’s generals supposedly carried a chest of silver. This was to pay mercenaries. In the winter of 1643, Swedish forces besieged Skanderborg Castle. Danish soldiers tried to secure the silver. They wanted to move it to Aarhus. The Swedish soldiers discovered them. The Danish soldiers made a hole in the ice. Under enemy fire, they dropped the chest into the lake. They did this to prevent the Swedes from seizing it.

To this day, people wonder if the chest is still down there.

Beyond legends, Stilling-Solbjerg Lake has unique environmental characteristics. It has high calcium levels. Bathing here is safe. Stilling Beach Park even boasts a Blue Flag designation. However, the lake faces environmental challenges. High chlorophyll levels have been an issue. Pollution from phosphorus and nitrogen was a problem. This came from agriculture and wastewater. Efforts since the 1980s have improved the situation. Agricultural runoff has decreased. Phosphorus levels remain high. This is due to accumulation in the lake sediment. Algal blooms can occur in late summer.

Despite these challenges, Stilling-Solbjerg Lake supports diverse plant and animal life. Thirteen plant species call this lake home. Fish species include pike, rudd, and perch. Roach and perch dominate. Zander have also become established.

So, as you gaze out over Stilling-Solbjerg Lake, remember its stories. Think of the Viking settlements. Imagine the soldiers dropping silver into the icy depths. Consider the ongoing efforts to protect this natural space. This lake is more than just water. It is a living, breathing testament to history and nature.
