Beneath the Jakarta skyline stands Masjid Al-Mubarok. Its aged stones whisper tales of centuries past. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a silent witness to Jakarta’s tumultuous history.

Masjid Al-Mubarok is more than a place of worship. It’s a living monument. It first opened its doors in 1527. That’s almost five centuries ago. Pangeran Adipati Awangga Gelar Pangeran Kuningan built it. He is also known as Syekh Arkanuddin. The prince played a pivotal role in the region’s history. He fought alongside the Demak-Cirebon forces. Their goal? To wrest Sunda Kelapa from the Padjajaran Kingdom. This victory led to the renaming of the city as Jayakarta.

Pangeran Kuningan wasn’t just a warrior. He was also instrumental in driving out Portuguese invaders. His efforts significantly contributed to the spread of Islam. He established a center of power in what was then a wild and sparsely populated area. He used the river to reach the new settlement. The journey by land would have been difficult. He established his base near Masjid Al-Mubarok.

The mosque has stood the test of time. It stands tall amidst towering modern structures. The mosque has seen countless changes in Kuningan. It has been a place of peace and refuge throughout. The mosque’s original structure suffered some damage over the years. Parts of it collapsed in the 1920s. However it was rebuilt. The reconstruction retained 65 percent of the original design.

Today Masjid Al-Mubarok remains a vibrant center of Islamic learning and prayer. The mosque’s architecture is a blend of traditional Javanese styles. Its tiered roofs are topped with a small dome. Intricate Jepara wood carvings adorn the windows and doors. These carvings feature Islamic calligraphy and floral motifs. The mihrab. an alcove indicating the direction of Mecca is particularly striking. It showcases beautiful ceramic work. The mosque has two floors. It has a total area of 400 square meters. This spacious area can accommodate up to 800 worshippers.

More than a place of prayer. Masjid Al-Mubarok is a treasured piece of Jakarta’s heritage. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. It’s a reminder of the city’s long and fascinating past. Take a moment to appreciate its quiet strength. This ancient mosque continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community. It stands as a proud symbol of Jakarta’s rich history.
