Tucked away in the heart of Dallas, Bear Creek Baptist Church has a story to tell. A story of pioneers, faith, and community. Bear Creek Baptist Church wasn’t always located here in Dallas. Its roots stretch back to 1853 in eastern Tarrant County, near a place now known as Euless. The church was initially known as the United Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Bear Creek. It was the third of its kind in the county, linked to the historic Lonesome Dove Church and under the guidance of Reverend John A. Freeman. Imagine those early days. Families gathering for worship near the banks of Bear Creek. The earliest marked grave in the adjacent cemetery belongs to Hiram Jackson Farris, a poignant reminder of the lives lived and lost in this community. The church minutes reveal not only the names of its members, like the Crowleys and Joneses, but also glimpses into their daily lives. These records provide a fascinating look at local history. They fill the void left by the missing 1860 Tarrant County census. Bear Creek Baptist Church later relocated to Dallas County. It eventually became known as Western Heights Missionary Baptist Church. While the congregation moved, the original cemetery, Bear Creek Cemetery, remains. It serves as a final resting place for many pioneers of eastern Tarrant County. The church’s journey reflects the spirit of the American West. People moved, adapted, and built new communities, always carrying their faith with them. As you stand here, consider the echoes of those who came before. Their legacy continues, woven into the fabric of this city.
