Gazing at Western Springs, have you ever imagined it as the heart of Auckland’s water supply? Western Springs, also known as Te Wai Ōrea, meaning “the waters of eels”, was once vital to Auckland’s survival. This wasn’t just a picturesque park. It was the lifeblood of a growing city. Imagine Auckland in the mid-1800s. The city was expanding rapidly, and the old wells couldn’t keep up. A temporary pipe from Auckland Domain helped, but a long-term solution was desperately needed. Enter Edward Orpen Moriarty, an Australian civil engineer tasked with quenching Auckland’s thirst. His gaze fell upon Western Springs. In 1875, the area underwent a transformation. The swampy land became a 15-acre artificial lake, capable of holding 22 million gallons. Workers tirelessly removed 20,000 cartloads of spoil and built a sturdy embankment 40 feet wide at the base. A pumphouse, designed by William Errington, housed a magnificent beam engine. This engine, remarkably, is still in working order today at MOTAT. From Western Springs, water flowed to reservoirs at Ponsonby Road and Karangahape Road, and another near Khyber Pass Road. Gravity then carried the precious water down to the city. This ingenious system served Auckland faithfully until 1936 when the Waitākere Ranges dams took over. But Western Springs didn’t fade into obscurity. The area continued to evolve. Auckland Zoo opened in 1922, followed by Western Springs Stadium in 1929, and MOTAT in 1964, all clustered around this vital water source. The park we see today, a haven for birds and a popular spot for picnics, emerged from a less glamorous past. For decades, the area was neglected, becoming overgrown and a dumping ground. But in 1961, Auckland City Council embarked on a mission to reclaim Western Springs. The lake, choked with weeds, was restored, and the surrounding area transformed into the beautiful park we enjoy today. As you stroll around Western Springs, remember the story of this remarkable place. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and the power of nature to provide and inspire. From a vital water source to a vibrant park, Western Springs continues to hold a special place in Auckland’s heart.
