“Is this where they filmed that historical drama?” a student whispers, mistaking SK Sungai Ara for a movie set. SK Sungai Ara isn’t a relic of the past, but a vibrant school in Bayan Lepas, Penang. It has educated generations of students since its humble beginnings in 1883 as Relau Malay School. Originally, the school had only three teachers and about one hundred pupils. Imagine the changes they’ve witnessed. In 1927, the school moved to its current location in Sungai Ara. The name “Sungai Ara” translates to “fig river” in Malay, named after a river flowing through the area. The school expanded in 1952 and 1971, constantly adapting to the growing community. While the older buildings have been replaced due to space constraints, Block A, built in 1971, still stands as a testament to the school’s history. Later, in 1979 and 1988, Blocks B and C were added to accommodate the increasing student population. Today, SK Sungai Ara thrives with 1465 students and 95 teachers, continuing its mission to provide quality education. The school’s modern facilities, including a library and computer lab, blend seamlessly with its historical roots. SK Sungai Ara isn’t just a school; it’s a living story, constantly evolving while holding onto its rich past.
