What did it take to move an entire church? You’re looking at Saint Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church. This beautiful house of worship has a history that involves a journey, a leap of faith, and a dedication to preserving tradition. Saint Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church wasn’t always here in Burr Ridge. It started its life in the heart of Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood in 1931. Back then, a group of Carpatho-Russians, yearning for a place where they could practice their faith and control their church property, came together. They decided to break away from their former church and petitioned the Russian Orthodox Church to form their own parish. Their dream took shape on the corner of Western Avenue and 53rd Street. It was a true symbol of their hard work and devotion. For over five decades, the church thrived. But as the years passed and the congregation’s demographics shifted, they realized they needed to find a new home. In 1998, they made the momentous decision to relocate to Burr Ridge. They found a new piece of land on County Line Road and started anew. This stunning structure you see now is a testament to their commitment to their faith. It’s a place where generations have gathered to pray, celebrate, and find solace. Their journey from the bustling streets of Chicago to the peaceful suburbs speaks volumes about the resilience of faith and the importance of community.
