Ever wondered how a Lübeck neighborhood is transforming itself? I will tell you a story about Marli. Marli is a district within the St. Gertrud zone. The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is actively pursuing its goal of becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2040. An important activity is the creation and implementation of energetic neighborhood concepts.
After the Moisling district, for which a concept was created in 2015, the Marli district around Albert-Schweitzer-Strasse in the St. Gertrud district is now being energetically renovated. The concept was created from 2021 to 2022 and is now being implemented by the renovation management team. This team was established in the summer of 2023. It will coordinate, manage, and control the implementation of measures over the next three years. The renovation management is financed by subsidies from the federal government that accounts for 75%. The state of Schleswig-Holstein and budgetary funds from the Hanseatic City of Lübeck contributes to the rest of the finances.
Marli is on a climate course. During the concept phase, measures to put the Marli district on a climate course were developed with citizens. They were also developed with housing companies, Stadtwerke Lübeck, and other stakeholders. Now, the politically decided measures are being implemented in the following fields of action: Renewable heat and electricity supply. Energetic building modernization. Climate-friendly mobility. Climate adaptation and biodiversity.
Renewable energies, a sustainable heat supply, and an energetically modernized building stock are important adjusting screws on the way to a climate-neutral district. For this purpose, measures are being initiated for the district together with the municipal utilities. The goal is to expand the heating network and cover it with local renewable heat. In addition, there will be support for the implementation of tenant electricity concepts. This concept is for multi-family houses and for the modernization of buildings.
The renovation management offers eight free initial energy consultations on site at your building. These consultations provide initial information about modernization and funding. Regardless of location, you can also take part in one of our digital collective consultations on modernization, heat supply and photovoltaics. Dates will be announced on our communication channels.
Marli is actively shaping its neighborhood. Together with the residents and local stakeholders, Marli wants to take action and make the neighborhood fit for the future. The starter projects are being tackled as initial small-scale measures within the renovation management. This brings movement and the idea of climate protection into the district.
One starter project involves creating flower meadows. Numerous flower meadows and perennial beds are to be created on the lawns between the residential buildings in the southern area of the Marli energy district between Albert-Schweitzer-Strasse and Schlutuper Strasse. The creation of the flower meadows is supported by the Blütenbunt-Insektenreich joint project. The four adjacent housing companies Vonovia, Neue Lübecker, Lübecker Bauverein and the Grundstücks-Gesellschaft TRAVE also support the project. Blütenbunt-Insektenreich transforms monotonous green spaces into species-rich meadows with native plants and diverse nesting opportunities. In addition to our animal city dwellers, the residents can of course also enjoy the colorful flower meadows and help design the perennial beds themselves.
Another starter project is a cargo bike rental station. In cooperation with StattAuto, Lübecker Bauverein, Vonovia, Neue Lübecker, Grundstücks-Gesellschaft, TRAVE and the Vereinigte Baugenossenschaften Lübeck eG, a cargo bike rental station is to be set up in the district. A cargo bike can then be booked via the Stattauto app. It can be rented directly in the district and used flexibly for shopping or a trip to the water.
To make cycling more attractive for residents, not only do the route infrastructure and parking facilities have to be optimized. There should also be a supporting infrastructure, such as repair options. The Albert-Schweitzer-Schule is leading by example and is planning to set up a bicycle workshop. The school would also like to open this up to the residents for joint use.
The transformation of Marli is a collaborative effort. It involves residents, local organizations, and the city working together. The goal is to create a sustainable and climate-neutral neighborhood for the future.
