Can you imagine a supermarket transforming into a hub of learning? Right here, at the Yew Chung International School, Teaching Area Block C stands as a testament to innovative educational design. Teaching Area Block C wasn’t always a dedicated learning space. It began its life as a humble supermarket. Later, the school acquired it, initially using it as a temporary laboratory classroom. This renovation project, part of a larger campus overhaul, has breathed new life into the building. Teaching Area Block C serves as a temporary space for students while the main campus undergoes renovations. It’s also designed to become part of a cutting-edge teaching center. The architects behind Teaching Area Block C faced a unique challenge. How do you transform a building in a densely populated area to meet the needs of future education while minimizing disruption to the community? They envisioned the building as “The Observer,” a quiet presence in the heart of the city. The original supermarket facade was rather loud. The renovated Teaching Area Block C features a more subdued and tranquil facade. U-shaped glass windows now dominate, reducing noise and visual distractions from the busy urban streets. This creates a translucent, hazy aesthetic, reminiscent of a calm and artistic space. The main entrance has also been strategically relocated. It now faces the main campus to the east, fostering a stronger connection. Large, translucent windows flank the entrance, allowing the vibrancy of the campus to spill into the surrounding community. Inside Teaching Area Block C, approximately 1,000 square meters of space has been cleverly utilized to accommodate a variety of learning environments. Traditional spaces like the foyer and walkways have been reimagined as multifunctional teaching areas. Natural light and greenery filter through the U-shaped glass. This evokes the image of cells exchanging nutrients, creating a sense of interconnectedness between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The north side of the building houses a traditional classroom with flexible partitions. This allows for adaptable configurations, accommodating different class sizes and teaching styles. The furniture within the public spaces further defines various usage scenarios. A stepped gathering space for larger groups, a hands-on learning area with modular furniture, and individual study areas all cater to diverse learning styles and preferences. Movable furniture maximizes flexibility, creating an environment where students can shape their own learning experiences. The U-shaped glass, while minimizing external distractions, also turns the activities within the building into a subtle urban drama. Passersby catch glimpses of students engaged in learning, showcasing the dynamic energy of Teaching Area Block C.
