Whispers of ancient times echo around us. Here at 栄草原古墳, we stand on hallowed ground. This is not just a mound of earth. It is a testament to lives lived long ago.

栄草原古墳 sits within the “History Plaza”. It is part of a larger group of tombs. These tombs dot the hills near Hiroshima city. Specifically they are northwest of the Hiroshima Botanical Garden. They slightly ascend Senda Sports Park.

Imagine this hill. It rises 220 to 240 meters above sea level. From here, the Seto Inland Sea shimmers into view. This strategic location hints at the tomb’s importance. It suggests links to trade, military affairs and production.

The 栄草原 No. 1 Tomb is a keyhole-shaped tomb. It is a circular burial mound with a horizontal stone chamber. Sadly, much of the soil and stones have eroded over time.

Still, we can measure the remaining structure. It stretches eight meters east to west and nine meters north to south. This gives us an idea of its original size. These horizontal stone chambers were common in the later Kofun period.

They consist of two main parts. The first is the passageway called “Sendo.” It serves as the entrance. The second is the “Genshitsu.” This is where the deceased were laid to rest.

Archaeological digs have revealed interesting features. Stones once paved the floor. A large stone blocked the entrance after burial. This “Heisoku-seki” ensured the tomb’s sanctity.

Based on these findings, experts believe this tomb dates back to the latter half of the 7th century. Nearby, the Senda Sports Park holds more clues. Here, traces of a Yayoi period settlement have been found. These rice paddy remains provide a glimpse into the lives of those who lived here before.

Historians study these relics. They analyze trade patterns and military strategies. They assess the area’s overall productivity. These investigations help to determine the nature of these ancient settlements.
