“Open and affirming” that’s how the Church of the Ascension describes itself. This Episcopal Christian community resides right here in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood. But its story starts elsewhere.
In 1938, Reverend Walter Horn of St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish saw potential. He envisioned a mission in Magnolia. A group of Episcopalians formed a nucleus. They sought to create a community church. This included Lutherans, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and Methodists.
Early services of the Church of the Ascension weren’t held in a traditional building. Instead, they gathered at the Non-Commissioned Officers’ Club. Later, they met at the Post Theater at Ft. Lawton. Dan Ferry, from St. Paul’s, led these services. He served as a lay assistant. The Church of the Ascension embraced its role. It was “the body of Christ in the world.” This congregation believes in the Triune God. They value loving relationships. They seek forgiveness, reconciliation, freedom, and healing.
The Church of the Ascension stands steeped in tradition. Yet, it is not mired in the past. The community looks to the future with hope. Bible study is a key part of the Church of the Ascension experience. It meets from September to May. These sessions happen in DeWitt Hall. The group studies various books of the Bible. They seek wisdom from ancient texts. The goal is guidance for living in today’s world. Everyone is welcome to participate in the Bible study. Childcare is provided. No previous Bible study experience is needed.
The Church of the Ascension emphasizes inclusivity. Its members see themselves on a shared path. This path follows Jesus. The Church of the Ascension embraces people. It welcomes them warmly. It offers a caring environment. It cherishes tradition. It looks forward with hope. The Church of the Ascension is more than a building. It is a community of faith. It is a beacon of hope. It welcomes all who seek spiritual growth. It promotes love and understanding. The Church of the Ascension offers a sanctuary. It is a place for reflection and renewal.
