Nestled on Chester Road, a charming street in Forest Gate, stands Grangewood Independent School. This is a place where children from the age of two to eleven embark on an incredible journey of learning and discovery. Founded in 1979, the school was the brainchild of Dr. Clive Vellacott, a Christian doctor, and his wife, Susan. They had a vision for a school that would nurture not only academic excellence but also strong moral values.
The school started small, with only seven pupils in the first year. But within a year, it rapidly expanded to accommodate twenty pupils and moved to its current location in the lower hall of Plashet Park United Reformed Church. Despite its initial small size, Grangewood soon gained recognition for its dedication to comprehensive education in a safe and supportive environment. Over time, the school grew, eventually acquiring the freehold of the property in 1992.
One of the most fascinating things about Grangewood is its emphasis on inclusivity. While the school has a Christian ethos at its heart, it welcomes children from all backgrounds. In fact, the majority of its students come from diverse communities, reflecting the multicultural tapestry of London. This open approach ensures that every child feels valued and respected, fostering a harmonious learning environment where differences are celebrated.
Grangewood Independent School is a testament to the powerful impact of a dedicated vision. It has grown from a humble beginning into a thriving educational institution, providing a unique and rewarding learning experience for children from all walks of life.
