Slipping through time’s veil, imagine Dubrovnik in 1991. A dark shadow fell over the city on December 6th, the feast day of Sv. Nikola od Škara. This day, typically filled with festive cheer, became etched in memory for a far different reason. The Serbian-Montenegrin forces launched their fiercest attack on Dubrovnik. Sv. Nikola od Škara, once primarily a religious figure, became intertwined with this pivotal moment. The church of Sv. Nikola od Škara, nestled in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town at the intersection of Prijeko and Zlatarske streets, stands as a silent witness to the city’s history. This dual-aisled church, with its four-part structure and blend of architectural styles, has seen centuries unfold. Its oldest part, the southern aisle, dates back to the pre-Romanesque period, evident in the preserved vault, lesenes, and cupola. Later additions, in the Gothic period, saw the church extended and a northern aisle added. The church further evolved in 1607 with westward expansion and again in 1834 with the addition of a sacristy. The intertwining of architectural styles mirrors the evolution of the cult of Sv. Nikola od Škara. Before 1991, the saint was largely associated with gift-giving and the safe return of loved ones, especially seafarers. After the siege, Sv. Nikola od Škara took on a new meaning, becoming a symbol of protection for the defenders of Dubrovnik. This transformation, studied by researchers at the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences, reveals how a religious symbol can evolve, taking on new significance in times of crisis. The researchers found two distinct meanings attributed to Sv. Nikola od Škara: the traditional, pre-1991 association with joyous celebrations and family, and the modern connotation of trauma and resilience born from the 1991 siege. Sv. Nikola od Škara, the protector of travelers and seafarers, became the protector of a city under siege. The church, with its ancient stones and echoes of history, stands as a tangible link to this evolving narrative, a poignant reminder of Dubrovnik’s enduring spirit.
