Gräf Zichy Domonkosné’s sprawling estate once dominated the landscape of what we now know as Rákoscsaba-Újtelep. It was a time of transformation, the early 1920s, when the winds of land reform swept across Hungary. Rákoscsaba-Újtelep began as a collection of plots carved from this estate, sold off piece by piece. Imagine the scene: 373 house plots springing up, marking the birth of a new community. Roads began to appear, bearing names like Ároktő, Diadal, Bártfai, and Szent Imre herceg útja. The former Kavicsos-dűlő and Anglia-dűlő, once agricultural fields, transformed into a bustling neighborhood. By 1926, the area was known as Bolza-telep, a nod to the former landowner. The community was growing rapidly. Requests for street lighting flooded the local council, leading to the installation of lamps in 1930. Rákoscsaba-Újtelep’s growth continued, attracting a mix of workers and professionals. By 1935, over 500 houses dotted the landscape, sheltering around 2,000 residents. The area, initially known as Bolza-telep, also encompassed the burgeoning Vangel-telep. This growth spurred further requests for development, from expanding the water supply to establishing a local cemetery. The community’s increasing needs prompted calls for a local school, a plea that would echo for years. The spirit of self-reliance was strong in Rákoscsaba-Újtelep. Residents, eager to improve their community, formed the Rákoscsabai House and Landowners Association in 1937. This association championed the economic and cultural interests of the residents, publishing a local newspaper, “Rákoscsaba,” to address their concerns. Rákoscsaba-Újtelep, along with several surrounding areas, became part of Budapest’s 17th district in 1950. The name, Rákoscsaba-Újtelep, became official in 1990, cementing its place in the city’s tapestry. This area, born from land reform and shaped by the determination of its residents, continues to thrive as a vibrant part of Budapest.
