“Nancy” is more than just a name on a street sign here on Rue de Nancy. It is a tribute to a city in northeastern France. This Parisian street in the 10th arrondissement has a story rooted in history and geography.

Rue de Nancy’s tale begins long before its current name. Imagine Paris in 1652. A map drawn by Gomboust shows a path that traces the line of this very street. Back then, it was part of the “Rue des Marais”. Even earlier, it was known as “Rue des Marais-du-Temple.” This long road stretched into what is now Rue Albert-Thomas. The creation of Boulevard de Magenta split the old road.

The street officially became Rue de Nancy in 1930. Its new name honored the city of Nancy. The reason was simple. The nearby Gare de l’Est train station served Nancy. It was a fitting tribute to a city connected to Paris by rail.

Today, Rue de Nancy is a relatively short street. It stretches just 140 meters. It is almost 10 meters wide. It begins at 35 Boulevard de Magenta and ends at 86 Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin.

Next time you find yourself near Gare de l’Est. Take a stroll down Rue de Nancy. Remember its history. Think of the city it honors. It is a small street with a big story. A story of connection. A story of place. It is a reminder that even the shortest street can link us to a wider world.
