In 1878, a grand mansion rose on the land once owned by Nicholas Were. This is the story of Billilla Gardens. Billilla Gardens began its life thanks to a successful merchant, Robert Wright. He envisioned a stately home amidst exquisite formal gardens. This mansion, known as Billilla Historic Mansion, became one of Bayside’s iconic landmarks. The gardens, retaining their original 19th-century layout, whisper tales of Victorian elegance. Billilla Gardens saw a change of ownership in 1888. William Weatherly, a pastoralist, acquired the property and gave it the name “Billilla.” He embraced the Art Nouveau style, leaving his mark on the mansion’s curved entrance and elaborate ceiling motifs. The Weatherly family cherished Billilla Gardens for generations, until 1972. Then, Brighton City Council, now Bayside City Council, purchased the property. They recognized its historical significance and preserved it for public enjoyment. Today, Billilla Gardens stands as a testament to Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The mansion provides a stunning backdrop for weddings and other events. The gardens offer a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to wander along winding paths. They can admire the charming water fountain, the wrought-iron gates, and the fragrant rose garden. Remnants of the past linger, like the butler’s quarters, dairy, meat house, stable garden store, and coach house. These outbuildings offer a glimpse into the daily life of those who once called Billilla home. Billilla Gardens is more than just a beautiful place. It is a living story, etched in stone and foliage. It whispers tales of prosperity, family legacy, and the enduring beauty of nature.
