Here stands Dansekapellet. It is more than just a building. It’s a story of transformation. This former chapel and crematorium now pulsates with life.
Originally built in 1908, this building served as a final stop for the deceased. Imagine the solemnity of its past. Since 2012, Dansekapellet has been reborn. It is now a vibrant hub for dance and movement.
The City of Copenhagen decided to breathe new life into the old buildings. Now children and young people fill its halls with energy. You can find all sorts of dance here. Contemporary, urban, ballet and belly dance find a home within these walls.
Step inside and you will discover five dance studios. Two are equipped for performances. Three are perfect for smaller groups or solo practice. The Kuppelsal is the heart of Dansekapellet. Its oval shape creates an intimate atmosphere. It can hold up to 350 people.
Notice the building’s architecture. The architects carefully preserved its history. You can see the original character traits. The complex hallways and vaulted ceilings remain. Even the load-bearing columns whisper tales of the past.
Light streams in through the windows. The architects have made it a more open and inviting space. It encourages movement and creative expression.
Outside the domed building looks much as it always has. Don’t let that fool you. Inside, a transformation has taken place.
In 2019, a new light installation brightened the courtyard. Artist Thilo Frank created a kaleidoscopic effect. Mirrors reflect activities from the yard out to Bispebjerg Torv.
The courtyard itself was renovated. A new outdoor scene was created. It officially opened in August 2021. It was part of the 5th subURBAN DANCE FESTIVAL.
Dansekapellet wanted to expand its activities. They wanted to reach new audiences. The renovated courtyard provides a space for dancers, neighbors, and visitors. People can use it for performances, social activities, or simply to relax.
Dansekapellet dreamed of using the yard for activities for almost 10 years. They wanted to create activities focused on community. They wanted to involve neighbors.
Dansekapellet is a perfect example of innovative renovation. It respects its history while embracing a new purpose. It’s a place where movement and memory meet. This is a place where the past supports the present.
