Ever wondered where Paris gets its food? Right here at the Rungis International Market. This sprawling complex is more than just a market it’s a city within a city. A bustling hive of activity that supplies the French capital with a vast array of culinary delights.
Rungis wasn’t always located in the southern suburbs. For centuries Paris’ central market resided in Les Halles. However it became too small. In 1969 the market was moved to Rungis. Its excellent rail and highway access and proximity to Orly Airport made it the perfect location.
Imagine 232 hectares of buildings a space slightly larger than Monaco. Every day 13000 people work here. 26000 vehicles including 3000 heavy trucks deliver 1698000 tonnes of goods annually. It’s the largest wholesale food market in the world with the highest turnover. This market is the property of the French State and managed by Semmaris.
Unfortunately tragedy struck on September 25 2022. A warehouse fire broke out highlighting the scale and potential risks within this immense operation.
Think of the sensory overload. The sights the sounds the smells of fresh fish meat fruits vegetables and flowers. The constant hum of activity the shouts of traders the rumble of trucks. It’s a symphony of commerce a ballet of fresh produce.
Rungis isn’t just about numbers though. It’s about the people. The generations of families who have worked here the passion they have for their products. The dedication to quality and freshness that defines this unique place. From the early morning hours until the late morning it’s an essential part of the Parisian culinary landscape. A place where the city’s gastronomic heart beats strong. It is a testament to culinary excellence an ode to fresh ingredients and a spectacle of wholesale food commerce.
