Did you know that the Institut Perguruan Tinggi Ilmu Qur’an PTIQ is a truly unique institution? It stands as a testament to Indonesia’s rich Islamic heritage. PTIQ was established on April 1 1971. It’s the first college in the world to focus specifically on memorizing and studying the Quran. This wasn’t just some random decision. It came from a deep understanding of the growing need for Quranic scholars in Indonesia.

The National Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an MTQ in Makassar in 1968 highlighted this need. The competition showed the urgent demand for experts in the field. PTIQ aimed to fill this gap. The founders recognized the scarcity of hafiz experts. They were passionate about preserving and promoting the Quranic knowledge. They worked to ensure future generations of Indonesian Muslims had access to these experts.

The Ihya Ulumudin Foundation led by key figures like KH Mohammad Dahlan. Dahlan was the Minister of Religion from 1967 to 1971. Prof KH Ibrahim Hosen LML and KH Ahmad Zaini Miftach the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque were also involved. Their combined influence and dedication laid the foundation for PTIQ’s success. Their commitment ensured a solid base for teaching and learning. They helped develop a program of excellence.

In 1973 the management transferred to the Al-Quran Education Foundation. Lt Gen (Purn) DR H Ibnu Sutowo founded it. Today his son H Ponco Susilo Nugroho continues this legacy. The institute’s dedication is reflected in its enduring success. Its impact on Indonesian society continues to grow. PTIQ’s establishment proved inspirational. The Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia opened a special faculty for Quranic studies just two years later. It was directly inspired by PTIQ’s pioneering work.

PTIQ stands not just as an educational institution. It is a beacon of Islamic scholarship and a source of national pride. It’s more than just a building. It is a living testament to the importance of the Quran in Indonesian culture. It continues its vital role shaping future generations of religious scholars. The legacy of PTIQ and its founders continues to inspire. The institution’s influence remains a cornerstone of Islamic learning in Indonesia.
