Did Immanuel College always have such a grand name? No. It started simply as a vision. A vision of Chief Rabbi, Baron Immanuel Jakobovits. He dreamt of a Jewish day school that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best non-Jewish independent schools. Immanuel College, located on Elstree Road in Bushey, is the realization of that dream. The school opened its doors in 1990, thanks to the significant financial support of the Kalms and Ronson families. In recognition of their generosity and Lord Jakobovits’s vision, the school was christened ‘The Charles Kalms ⋅ Henry Ronson Immanuel College’. Lord Jakobovits, born in Königsberg, Germany, had a remarkable life. He led the Jewish communities in Ireland and New York before becoming Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth. A man of great intellect, he was knighted in 1981 and became the first Rabbi to be made a life peer in 1988. He even received a Lambeth DD from the Archbishop of Canterbury, another first for a Jewish individual. His work in medical ethics, particularly at the intersection of medical ethics and Jewish law, is considered pioneering. He literally wrote the book, “Jewish Medical Ethics”. Lord Jakobovits passed away in 1999 and is buried in Jerusalem. Immanuel College, named in his honour, carries forward his legacy. It provides boys and girls with an excellent education, empowering them to achieve their potential and contribute positively to the world.
